Treatment of osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a bone brittleness disease which weakens the structure and strength of the bone and thereby increases the risk for fractures. The first symptom of osteoporosis is usually fractures and associated pain.

There are many possible causes of bone brittleness, but contributing factors - apart from ageing - include lack of exercise or long-term immobility, excessive smoking, lack of calcium, a thin body build, lack of vitamin D and particularly long-term cortisone treatment. Osteoporosis has been found to be more common among women.

It is important to diagnose osteoporosis and begin treatment at an early stage. Osteoporosis is diagnosed through bone density measurements and, if necessary, blood tests and other tests. At Diacor, we perform bone density measurements (Dexa tests), which quickly and easily provide information about the strength of the bones. You need a doctor’s referral to undergo a bone density measurement.

There are many treatment options for osteoporosis. The basic treatment and recommendation is to ensure sufficient intake of calcium and vitamin D and to exercise and maintain muscle strength. Prevention of fractures and falling accidents is also part of the treatment. An individual treatment and medication plan is drawn up for each patient.
