Surgical treatment of umbilical hernias and abdominal wall hernias
In some young children, stomach contents protrude through a small opening (hernia) in the navel. This is a relatively common problem which usually rectifies itself within a year.
If the hernia has not closed by the time the child is four years old, it should be repaired surgically. Hernias above the navel (abdominal wall hernias) do no usually heal by themselves and are therefore repaired through a small incision under general anaesthesia. Recovery from the procedure, which is performed as a day surgery procedure, is quick.
