Sleep specialist nurse services

Sleep specialist nurses specialize in treating sleep apnea. The most common symptoms of sleep apnea are repeated interruptions of breathing during sleep, snoring and daytime tiredness. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy provides immediate relief.

The oxygen deficiency caused by interruptions in breathing puts strain on the cardiovascular system. Untreated sleep apnea therefore increases the risk of high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia, heart failure and cerebrovascular disorders.

One of the most significant risk factors for sleep apnea is overweight. Overweight causes excess fat to accumulate around the neck and throat, constricting the airways and possibly interrupting breathing. Sleep apnea is most common in 40-65-year-olds.

The sleep specialist nurse can provide information on sleep apnea and the different treatment options. In mild cases, losing weight may be enough. In moderate or severe cases, CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy is an efficient and popular form of treatment. The sleep specialist nurse helps you find a suitable CPAP mask and tests the CPAP machine with you. You will be given a CPAP set to take home with you.

In necessary, you will be booked in for follow-up appointments. For instance, CPAP treatment requires at least two appointments with the sleep specialist nurse.
