MRI scans

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a safe and reliable tool for examining bones and cartilage as well as soft tissues such as muscles, tendons and ligaments. It can also be used to examine brains, nerves and blood vessels. Each scan is planned individually, according to the referral.

We have access to two modern MRI scanners with large openings. These make the examination significantly more comfortable for the patient. The examination room has windows that let in light, and the patient can listen to music during the examination. The examination takes 20-40 minutes. We scan patients of all ages, including children. In order for the scan to be successful, the child must be able to stay still. If you wish, we can arrange for you to visit the examination room and see the scanners prior to the examination.

MRI scans are usually not performed during the first trimester of pregnancy or if the patient has a heart pacemaker. Other metal parts in the body, such as implants or splinters, may also prevent an MRI scan. If you have metal parts or fragments in your body, you can discuss the matter with your physician or contact the scanning unit in advance.

The results of the scan will be available later the same day or, in urgent cases, immediately after the scan. You will be given an opportunity to discuss the results with the physician who referred you for the scan.
