Mammography

Mammography (breast X-ray) is the primary method for examining abnormalities in the mammary gland.

The examination is quick and simple. The breast is compressed between two plates for a few seconds. The purpose of the compression is to reduce the radiation dose and to make the picture as sharp as possible. Four pictures, two for each breast, are usually taken. It is also possible to take enlarged and targeted images. If necessary, a biopsy can be taken. The examination takes 20-40 minutes.

At Diacor, a mammography is always supplemented with an ultrasound examination. This way, we are able to get a complete picture of the breast tissue.

You will get an opportunity to discuss the results and any further treatment options with the physician who referred you for the mammography.

Instructions

1.

You need a referral (for instance from a general practitioner, an occupational physician or a gynecologist) to be eligible for a mammography.

2.

When you have a referral, you can make an appointment online, by calling 09 7750 800 or directly with the medical centre where the examination will be performed. When making an appointment online, select ‘mammography/ultrasound’.

3.

If you have previously had a mammography, please bring your old pictures. You should also bring your referral (which may also be electronic) and a valid SII (Kela) card to the examination.

4.

To get the results, please make an appointment or telephone appointment with the physician who referred you for the test.

Expenses

The examination costs €158. In most cases, the Social Insurance Institution (Kela) reimburses part of the cost and the patient only pays a deductible of €117. No administrative fee is charged for a mammography.
