Maitland physiotherapy

The Maitland Concept, which was developed by the Australian physiotherapist Geoffrey Maitland, is the most widespread approach within orthopaedic manual physiotherapy globally. Physiotherapy according to the Maitland concept is particularly suitable for treating disorders in the musculoskeletal system.

Maitland therapy is given by physiotherapists who have special training in this type of physiotherapy. Manual physiotherapy means that the examinations and treatment are performed by hand. Typical examination and treatment techniques include mobilisation and manipulation, which are used to treat functional disorders and pain in the joints and surrounding tissues. Neural tissue can also be mobilised. Pain is treated with gentler techniques, and if stiffness is the main problem, the intensity of the treatment can be increased to a suitable level. A trained manipulative physiotherapist can treat pain and movement restrictions in the musculoskeletal system safely and efficiently.

The patient and his or her own experiences are central to the Maitland concept. The physiotherapist strives to spend sufficient time on each examination so as to ensure that the patient receives appropriate treatment. The effects of each technique are systematically assessed in light of the results from the examinations. This system ensures efficient treatment. Apart from manual therapy, exercise also plays a key role in restoring optimal mobility and functionality.
