Lymphatic drainage

Lymphatic drainage is a specialist field of physiotherapy which is used to stimulate the body's lymphatic circulation and thereby reduce swelling.

Lymphatic drainage is particularly suitable as part of the rehabilitation after surgery, radiotherapy and injuries. It can also be used to reduce swelling caused by chronic diseases such as arthritis, fibromyalgia and erysipelas, and to treat abnormal lymphatic vessel development and congenial lymphatic dysfunction.  Apart from swelling, lymphatic drainage can also help reduce pain caused by different kinds of diseases and injuries.

Lymphatic drainage is a gentle manual massage technique used to drain the fluid between the cells and stimulate the development of new lymphatic vessels. The superficial lymphatic system, which carries the majority of the body fluid load, is located in the tissue directly underneath the skin. Therefore, lymphatic drainage massage has to be gentle. The effect of the treatment is maintained with elastic bandages and compression sleeves or socks, unless there is a health-related barrier for this. Lymphatic taping can be used to facilitate the liquid flow in the lymphatic system. Exercises and guidance on self-care and skin care are also integral parts of the treatment. Lymphatic drainage cannot be performed during an acute viral, bacterial or fungal infection.
