Gastrointestinal endoscopic examinations in Diacor Turku

We perform many gastrointestinal examinations, i.e. examinations of the digestive organs. Endoscopic examinations also provide opportunities to take biopsies, which can later be studied more carefully. The most common examinations are the following:

  • Endoscopic examination of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum (gastroscopy) is the primary tool for diagnosing problems in the upper abdomen. The procedure is performed with a flexible endoscope, which is inserted through the mouth and used to examine the oesophagus, the stomach and the duodenum (i.e. the upper part of the small intestine). If necessary, biopsies are also taken. The procedure takes 30 minutes and is painless.
  • Endoscopic examination of the colon (colonoscopy) is the primary tool for diagnosing diseases in the colon. A flexible endoscope is inserted through the anus and used to examine the rectum and the colon all the way to the caecum, and often also the first part of the small intestine. The procedure takes around half an hour and is usually painless.
  • Endoscopic examination of the anus (proctoscopy) is a supplementary examination, which is, for instance, used in the treatment of hemorrhoids.
  • Endoscopic examination of the rectum (rectoscopy) is an examination of the anus and rectum.
  • Endoscopic examination of the lower part of the colon (sigmoidoscopy)

During the above-mentioned examinations, procedures such as polyp or hemorrhoid removals can be performed through ligation (i.e. by tying off the polyp or hemorrhoid with a rubber band), which is particularly suitable for treating small hemorrhoids.

Gastroscopy and colonoscopy procedures are generally considered very unpleasant, and some even find them frightening. However, after the procedure, most patients feel that the experience was not as unpleasant as they thought it would be.

If you are still very anxious about the procedure, we offer you the option of relaxing or sedative medication. There are two options: an oral sedative medication, or intravenous muscle relaxant and painkiller (‘light anesthesia’). You do not need a separate referral for this. Just let us know that you want relaxing or sedative medication when making your appointment.

You will get the results from the physician who referred you to the test.

You need a doctor’s referral to undergo these gastrointestinal examinations.
