Gastroenterologist services

A gastroenterologist, i.e. an expert in digestive diseases, specialises in examining and treating sufferers of digestive tract disorders.

The most common types of digestive tract disorder are different kinds of functional disorders or diseases in the oesophagus, stomach or bowels. Among the most common problems are heartburn and various kinds of upper abdominal and bowel symptoms such as abdominal pain, swelling, constipation, diarrhoea and bloody stools.

Gastroenterologists specialise in treating conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (heartburn), irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis disease and Crohn's disease. Apart from bowel diseases, gastroenterologists also specialise in diagnosing liver and biliary diseases, i.e. the causes for elevated liver values, inflammatory liver diseases or other liver and biliary symptoms.

The most important gastroenterological examination methods are gastroscopy and colonoscopy. A gastroscopy may, for instance, be performed in cases of severe or prolonged gastroesophageal reflux disease, suspected coeliac disease or epigastric symptoms. A colonoscopy, on the other hand, is most commonly performed because of suspected bowel disease, prolonged diarrhoea, other functional disorders of the bowel or bloody stools. During the procedure, the physician performs biopsies of the mucous membranes. These biopsies are examined by a pathologist and the results are given to you during a separate appointment or by phone. Polyps, which are a risk factor for cancer, can also be removed from the bowels during a colonoscopy procedure. The removal of polyps is the most efficient way of preventing the development of colorectal cancer, a disease which is becoming more and more common.

Other examination methods include oesophageal pressure measurement (manometry) and 24 hour pH monitoring in cases of suspected reflux disease. Digestive diseases can also be diagnosed and monitored using blood tests, ultrasound examinations or MRI scans. If necessary, the gastroenterologist can also refer the patient for surgery or further examinations.

Make an appointment online or by calling 09 7750 800. You can also make an appointment at the reception desk at any Diacor medical centre.

Bring a list of any medications you are using, complete with the strengths and doses.

If you have received treatment or been for follow-up visits elsewhere, please bring any relevant test results and case histories.

When paying, you can also schedule appointments for any additional examinations that your doctor has prescribed for you.

A private physician sets his or her own rates, so the prices may vary depending on the amount of time the appointment takes, for instance. You can get information about a particular physician’s rates online or when you make an appointment.
An appointment of less than 30 minutes normally costs around 110 €, but a Social Insurance Institution (Kela) reimbursement of 16,50 € is directly subtracted from the price. The customer pays 93,50 € plus an outpatient clinic fee 17,90 €. Any necessary examinations are billed separately.
