Eye specialist services

The most common reasons for seeking help from an ophthalmologist, i.e. an eye specialist are deteriorating vision, visual disturbances, infections, pain and problems with dry eyes. As some eye diseases cause no symptoms, and as the risk for eye disease increases significantly with age, regular eye examinations are an important preventive measure.

It is recommended that persons over the age of 40 have their eyes examined at least every five years, and that persons over the age of 60 do so at least every three years (national guidelines for glaucoma prevention). If you have eye disease in the family, it is advisable to have your eyes examined more often.

The eye specialist tests your vision with various devices, examines your eyes with a microscope, and measures eye pressure. He or she also checks for refractive errors, gives you a prescription for glasses if you need one and performs other special tests as necessary.

Eye examinations often require the use of eye drops which either widen the pupil or anaesthetise the eye. Pupil widening drops take effect after 10-20 minutes, and the effect lasts for a few hours, sometimes even until the next day. Anaesthesia drops take effect immediately, and the effect lasts for around half an hour. The eye drops may cause a temporary burning sensation. We recommend that you bring a pair of sunglasses to your appointment, and that you do not drive to your appointment. This way, you are prepared in case pupil widening drops are needed; sunglasses protect you from being dazzled by light, and you are not allowed to drive when your pupils are artificially dilated.

During the appointment, you can discuss possible further examinations, treatment and follow-up visits with the eye specialist. If necessary, the eye specialist will refer you for further examinations.

Instructions

1.

Some of our ophthalmologists currently only accept bookings by phone. If you cannot find the eye specialist you are looking for in our online booking system, please call our eye care unit on 09 7750 8160 or 09 7750 800.

2.

Please observe the following, especially if you are visiting us for the first time:

  • If you wear contact lenses, we recommend that you remove them before coming to your appointment.
  • Please bring your old glasses prescriptions and your current glasses, as well as your medication prescriptions.
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to any medication, please keep a list of the medication(s) in question and let the eye specialist know about the allergy before any eye drops are administered.
  • If you have received treatment or been for follow-up visits elsewhere, please bring any relevant case histories and test results.
  • Please inform the eye specialist of all prescription medications, over-the-counter medications and supplements you are currently using.
  • If you have eye disease in the family, you should let the eye specialist know.
3.

When paying, you can also schedule appointments for any additional examinations that the eye specialist has prescribed for you.

Expenses

An ophthalmologist sets his or her own rates, so the prices may vary depending on how long the appointment takes, for instance. You can get information about a particular physician’s rates online or when you make an appointment.
An appointment of less than 20 minutes normally costs around 100 euros, but a Social Insurance Institution (Kela) reimbursement of 13.50 euros is directly subtracted from the price. The customer pays 86.50 euros plus an administrative fee, which currently amounts to 17 euros. In this example, the customer therefore pays 103.50 euros for the visit. Any necessary examinations are billed separately.
