Ear, nose and throat surgery in children

Nose and ear infections as well as recurrent throat infections are common in young children. They can easily be treated surgically. At Diacor’s hospital, we offer you the services of paediatric surgeons and orthopaedists as well as a paediatric ear, nose and throat specialist.

In many cases, ear infections can be treated with painkillers or antibiotics. If the patient suffers from recurrent or prolonged middle ear infections, ear grommets can be an effective solution. Recurrent throat infections, obstructive tonsils and tonsil-related sleep apnoea should also be treated surgically. Adenoid removal surgery should be considered if the child suffers from recurring ear or sinus infections and persistent coughs and colds.

For each procedure, preparations are made not only by the surgeon him- or herself but also by a physician who specialises in anaesthesia and pain relief (i.e. an anaesthesiologist) and a team of nurses. We carefully assess the child’s general physical condition as well as any individual risk factors. Learn more about the preparations for surgical procedures here.

Paediatric surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. In most cases, the child can be discharged from care the same day. You will be given detailed home care instructions, and if necessary, we will also book you in for follow-up appointments.

To be eligible for surgery, the child needs a referral from a specialist. You can make an appointment with a paediatrician online or by calling 09 7750 800.

Please bring information about the child’s insurance and about any examinations he or she has had elsewhere. A parent can be present during the appointment.

If your child is referred to surgery, you can make an appointment for the procedure directly with the surgeon or by calling the hospital on 09 7750 8180. Before you make an appointment, please make sure that you have an approved promissory note from your insurance company.

Please read the hospital admission information.

Prices for the most common paediatric ear and throat procedures:
Insertion of grommets, (tympanostomy) starts from €930 (one side) and €1058 (both sides)
Grommet insertion (both sides) and adenoid removal surgery (adenoidectomy) starts from €1338
Grommet removal (from the eardrum/middle ear) starts from €839
Tonsillectomy starts from €2172
Adenoidectomy starts from €1147
Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy starts from €2478
Lingual frenotomy starts from €855

A total cost estimate is made during an appointment with the specialist who performs the procedure. The final price is determined by the materials and implants used, the duration and difficulty of the procedure, the need for additional examinations, and the length of the hospital stay. The Social Insurance Institution (Kela) can reimburse part of the surgeon’s and anaesthesiologist's fees. The size of the reimbursement is determined by the standard rate which has been set by the Social Insurance Institution for the relevant procedure code. In practice, the reimbursement does not cover the full cost of the procedure.

With a Diacor Hoitotili (Diacor Healthcare Account), you get opportunities for flexible payment. If you wish, you can pay your bill in instalments.
