Cataract surgery

There is no effective medication for cataracts. However, the eyesight can be restored through surgery. Cataract surgery has long been the most common surgical procedure in Finland. With modern surgical techniques, it can be performed safely and painlessly. Do not wait until the problems become severe; the eye heals faster if the procedure is performed at an earlier stage.

Cataract surgery should be performed as soon as the cataracts are starting to cause problems. Visual impairments can cause problems in everyday life and impair the sufferer’s overall performance.

Cataract surgery is a painless day surgery procedure, during which the clouded lens is carefully removed using ultrasound technology and replaced with an implant. A lens implant can relieve you from your cataracts and also correct near- and farsightedness as well as astigmatism. With a multifocal lens implant, the short-range vision can also be corrected. You might therefore no longer need glasses. The type of lens implant is always chosen during the pre-operative assessment according to your wishes and needs.

Modern cataract surgery techniques are safe and cost-effective. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and takes around 20 minutes. We have access to all the techniques and materials needed for modern cataract surgery. Learn more about the cataract surgery procedure here.

Recovery from cataract surgery is usually quick. The eyesight sharpens within a few days of the procedure. Aftercare eye drops should be used for about a month following the procedure. Using the sauna, swimming and sweating should be avoided for the first two weeks. The need for new glasses is assessed during a follow-up visit about a month after the procedure.

Schedule a preoperative assessment with an eye specialist by calling 09 7750 8160.

During your appointment, the procedure will be planned and scheduled.  During the preoperative assessment, you will meet the surgeon who performs the procedure and a nurse.

You should reserve around three hours for the operation. Cataract surgery is a day surgery procedure. If necessary, you can stay the night in hospital.

A follow-up examination will be performed about a month after the procedure, either by the surgeon or by the eye specialist who referred you for surgery.

The price for cataract surgery is determined by the type of lens implant chosen. You can get a Social Insurance Institution (Kela) reimbursement for the pre-operative assessment, the procedure itself and the follow-up examination.
The price for the preoperative assessment starts from 127 € plus an outpatient clinic fee of €17,90 €.
The price for cataract surgery in one eye starts from 1720 € plus an outpatient clinic fee of €17,90 €.
The follow-up examinations are billed according to the physician’s own rates. An outpatient clinic fee of 17,90 € is added to the price.

With a Diacor Hoitotili (Diacor Healthcare Account), you get opportunities for flexible payment. If you wish, you can pay your bill in instalments.
